Skate Jam

Overview: Inspired by the iconic animated sports film Space Jam, these designs bring the concept of Skate Jam to life.

At the center of the concept is Tony Hawk, one of the most recognizable figures in skateboarding. Rather than recreating an existing project, Skate Jam imagines a film and visual franchise that never happened, using the nostalgia and visual language of late-'90s/early-2000s sports entertainment as the foundation for a new creative direction.

Problem Statement:

  • Develop a fictional entertainment concept built around Tony Hawk and skateboarding.

  • Explore the question: What if skateboarding had its own Space Jam-style cultural phenomenon?

  • Create a visual identity that feels nostalgic while remaining original and contemporary.

  • Translate the fictional concept across multiple touchpoints, including entertainment, editorial, packaging, and digital media.

Research & Insights:

  • Studied the visual language of Space Jam and other iconic sports-entertainment properties from the 1990s and early 2000s.

  • Researched Tony Hawk's influence on skateboarding and its transition from subculture to mainstream entertainment.

  • Examined vintage skateboarding magazines, advertisements, video games, event graphics, and street culture.

  • Explored the relationship between skateboarding, animation, music, fashion, and youth culture.

  • Focused on the nostalgia surrounding an era when athletes increasingly became larger-than-life cultural icons.

Design Process:

  • Moodboard Creation: Archival skateboarding imagery and vintage skate graphics.

  • Color Palette: Black & Blue Gradient

  • Typography: Franklin Gothic Demi
